(NEXSTAR) – An estimated 20 million taxpayers will need to file before this week's deadline, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) warned Tuesday.
While most people filed earlier this year, returns are due by midnight on Wednesday for taxpayers who filed an extension for tax year 2024.
For anyone wondering if the congressional stalemate in Washington might give them more time to file, the answer is no, according to the IRS. Despite the government shutdown, taxes are still due.
“Filing and payment requirements under the Federal tax law remain unaffected by the current lapse in appropriations,” IRS representative Anthony Burke told Nexstar in early October, explaining that that the agency's budget is part of a separate funding package.
