A proposed $9 million project would bring two miles of trail and road work that would improve travel on Illinois Road for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists.

The Fort Wayne Redevelopment Commission Monday unanimously approved $6.2 million in tax increment financing funding for the project that will connect to the Getz Road sidewalk and the Towpath, Yarnelle and Ardmore Avenue trails. The 10-foot-wide trail is planned to be two miles long from Getz Road to North Rockhill Park with access to Jefferson Pointe, Parkwest Shopping Center and other businesses and restaurants along Illinois Road.

City Engineer Patrick Zaharako said the project would also improve access to the interstate by adding a third westbound lane on Illinois from Getz Road to Avenue of Autos.
