PEORIA, Ill (WMBD) -- State and local fire safety officials are focusing on reminding residents to make sure their smoke alarms work.

The Peoria Fire Department, along with the Office of the Illinois Fire Marshal, held a press conference on Oct. 14 at approximately 10 a.m.

The press conference at the Peoria Civic Center was aimed at stressing the importance of residents throughout the state to have working smoke alarms in their homes.

"The simple truth of it is that working smoke alarms save lives," said Illinois State Fire Marshal Michele Pankow.

This effort is part of the "Smoke Alarm Blitz" initiative brought forth by the Illinois Fire Safety Alliance.

Last year, in the first state-wide blitz, 71 Illinois fire Departments installed 2,351 smoke alarms across the state in one week. A
