SPRINGFIELD ( 25News Now ) - State lawmakers returned to Springfield on Tuesday for the first round of a two-week veto session, with lawmakers spending the next three days discussing bills addressing Chicago’s transit reform and energy.
The transit bill should address the Chicago Transit Authority’s budget, with an expected $1.9 trillion in debt over the next two years.
Republican State Rep. Travis Weaver (R-Edwards) said bills that would establish laws like a statewide grocery tax on services or a $1.50 tax on deliveries are intended to bail out the Chicago Transit Authority.
He said the CTA is not doing enough to address its own issues.
“Before you tell people who live in Peoria, Pekin, and Kewanee that they’ve got to pay for Chicago’s bailout, how about you go to the users first?”
