GREENVILLE, S.C. —

Greenville County Schools are considering a one-time impact fee on new construction to help address growth.

The district's Committee of the Whole on Tuesday voted to move forward on a comprehensive study of impact fees. The committee said it will cost just under $60,000 for the study.

Officials explained that impact fees are not a tax and will not appear on property tax bills, affecting only those buying new construction.

Trustee Chuck Saylors said money collected can be used for new schools and expansions, but not for maintenance, operations, or replacement costs.

"They need a little skin in that game," Saylors said. "We're not asking dollar for dollar. We don't know if we're going to move forward to the impact fees."
