LOUISVILLE, Ky. —

JCPS board members approved a recommendation Tuesday for an external firm to conduct an independent assessment of the factors behind the district’s $188 million budget shortfall.

Superintendent Brian Yearwood said the district plans to make $132 million in cuts from next year's budget.

“During the time of COVID, we had an influx of funds from our federal government. We added programs, positions, and things like that. When the funds ended, we just didn’t have a plan to actually make cuts,” said Yearwood.

The independent review will focus on:

Yearwood emphasized the value of an outside perspective: “They’re able to verify what we’re saying and perhaps give us suggestions and make sure that our numbers are solid.”
