Special Olympics Alaska hosted the 11th Annual Aging and Disability Summit this week.

This year’s theme, “Blazing New Trails: Aging Well in Alaska,” focused on improving life expectancy and quality of life for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Health experts and care providers shared strategies to address gaps in geriatric and disability-focused medical care.

“So we don’t have a very robust geriatric medical care community, or medical providers who focus on disabilities or aging in general. And we’re working on that,” said Riki Chapman from the University of Alaska Anchorage.

Community groups set up booths with resources and information for attendees. The summit wraps up on Wednesday in Anchorage.
