Haryana IPS Officer's Family Consents to Autopsy After Assurance

The family of Haryana IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar has agreed to a post-mortem examination following assurances from Chandigarh Police regarding a fair investigation. This decision comes after an impasse over the autopsy, which was delayed since Kumar's alleged suicide on October 7, 2025. His wife, IAS officer Amneet P. Kumar, stated that her consent was based on the commitment from the Haryana government to take action against any officials found at fault.

On October 15, 2025, Amneet Kumar expressed her trust in the police and judiciary, saying, "In view of the assurance extended by the Union Territory Police for conducting a fair, transparent and impartial investigation, I have consented to the conduct of the post-mortem examination of Late Y Puran Kumar, IPS." The autopsy is being conducted at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh.

The Chandigarh Police had previously sought a court order to compel the family to identify the body for the post-mortem. Following the family's identification of the body, the autopsy is now underway. A special investigation team has been formed to look into the circumstances surrounding Kumar's death, which has drawn significant political attention and public outcry.

Kumar, aged 52, reportedly left behind a note accusing several senior IPS officers, including Haryana DGP Shatrujeet Kapur, of caste-based discrimination and harassment. His family has demanded that these officers be named in a First Information Report (FIR) and face arrest for their alleged roles in his suicide.

In a related incident, an assistant sub-inspector in Rohtak, Sandeep Kumar, also reportedly took his own life, allegedly citing corruption issues involving the late officer. This has intensified scrutiny on the police department and the political landscape in Haryana.

Political leaders, including Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, have visited Kumar's family, urging immediate action against those responsible for his death. Protests have erupted across Haryana, with various Dalit organizations and opposition parties demanding justice for Y. Puran Kumar.
