Over 100 New Market residents voiced strong opposition Tuesday night to a proposed wastewater treatment plant near a popular section of the Flint River.
Dozens spoke during a three-hour public hearing hosted by the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) and Keep the Flint River Clean. The meeting was held to gather feedback on the plant proposed by Integra Water and whether ADEM should grant them the proper permits.
The planned facility would be located off Winchester Road, just a few hundred feet from a frequently used public boat ramp in the Berry Hill neighborhood. Residents expressed concern that the facility, which would discharge close to a million gallons of treated water daily into the river, could significantly impact both the environment and quality of life.
