Middlesbrough star Alfie Jones could be a surprise contender to head to next summer’s World Cup, as part of the Canada squad.

The English-born defender is eligible to represent Canada on the international stage because one of his grandparents was born there. And, as first reported by the Athletic , the process has started to gain Jones the clearances he needs to represent the North American nation on the international stage.

Former Leeds United boss Jesse Marsch, who is now in charge of the Canada national team, is said to have looked into players with dual nationality who could possibly bolster his ranks. Having discovered Jones’ availability, he is said to have immediately acted to get Jones on board.
