A British woman, 72, has died after her car collided head-on with a motorhome in Alicante, Spain.

The collision happened at about 2pm on Tuesday on the N-332 road in the Santa Pola area.

Spanish authorities believe the car the woman was driving went on to the opposite carriageway and struck the motorhome.

The woman, an expat who lived on the Orihuela Costa, died almost instantly. Firefighters freed her from the car but paramedics were unable to save her.

A Belgian man, 54, was driving the motorhome at the time of the collision. He was taken to hospital after sustaining serious injuries – however his wife was unharmed.

The crash caused significant traffic jams on the N-332, which lasted until around 5.30pm
