A homicide investigation is underway after a Philadelphia firefighter was found dead inside a rowhome in Holmesburg early Wednesday morning.

Officers were called to a rowhome on the 4700 block of Shelmire Avenue, just before 4 a.m.

Philadelphia police said a 56-year-old Philadelphia firefighter was found inside the home unresponsive and pronounced dead at 4:13 a.m.

"The Philadelphia Fire Department is heartbroken over the death of one of our members overnight," the department posted on X . "We are working closely with Philadelphia Police as they investigate. We ask that everyone keep the member's family and our colleagues in your thoughts as we process this tragedy."

A suspect has been taken into custody.

There is no word on the cause of death.
