U.S. Rep. Seth Moulton will challenge incumbent Sen. Ed Markey in next year’s Democratic primary for one of Massachusetts’ two Senate seats.

Moulton framed the race as a referendum on the future of the party.

“We need new leaders to step up and take us forward,” he wrote on the social media platform X on Wednesday morning. “Our future can’t wait.”

Moulton, 46, of Salem, has represented the state’s 6th Congressional District since 2015.

Markey’s tenure on Capitol Hill is considerably longer. He served in the U.S. House of Representatives for more than 36 years before winning his first Senate term in a 2013 special election.

He was elected to his first full Senate term in 2014 and reelected in 2020.
