OK, this is another “believe it or not” story. The Argentine economy is in a recession spiral with only a glimmer of hope unless it can find a wealthy patron — namely, the United States of America — to bail it out.
First, a few facts. In November 2023 Javier Milei, a former TV personality and chain-saw admirer of Elon Musk and Donald Trump, was elected president of Argentina, promising radical change. When he was elected, the Argentine economy was experiencing skyrocketing inflation (more than 200%) and an unstable peso. Once in office, Milei moved quickly to slash government programs and stabilize the volatile peso. Despite chain-saw size cuts in public spending to bring inflation down, in 2025 an estimated one-third of the country’s 46 million still live in poverty and the ranks of the
