Helena’s Open Lands team plans to perform prescribed burns on about 115 acres throughout this winter on the northwest face of Mount Ascension and on Mount Helena.
The prescribed burning season will start Nov. 1 and run through April 15 of next year, and burning will be weather-dependent, the city said.
It plans to burn piles near the Archery Range and Entertainment trails on Mount Ascension, as well as piles on Mount Helena near the Ambrose, Diretissima, Dump Out, Mount Helena Ridge, MxKelvey (Northwest Passage), Prairie and Swaney trails, the city’s Parks, Recreation and Open Lands Department said Tuesday.
These slash piles were created during thinning projects between 2021 and this year. The city says it will monitor safety and air quality during any prescribed burns.
