SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) - The City of Shreveport is being awarded a major grant to provide homes for the local homeless population.

The city is set to accept a two-year $400,000 grant from Bloomberg Philanthropies to build modular housing units to support the area's homeless citizens and families.

The units are repurposed shipping containers that offer transitional and permanent housing options.

The grant aims to reduce homelessness quickly and safely, and remove people from deplorable conditions.

Mayor Tom Arceneaux has it on city council's agenda for his administration to execute the documents needed for this grant for council will vote on it October 28.
