EAST LANSING — There’s a sign up in the Michigan State football team’s defensive room with a fitting message for what the Spartans are feeling amid a three-game losing streak. It’s an adaptation of the saying that hard times create strong men, strong men create good times, good times create weak men and weak men create hard times.

Saturday’s 38-13 shelling at the hands of UCLA got Michigan State booed off its own field. It made its coach, Jonathan Smith, the target of calls for his firing. Not hard to see where the Spartans are at in that progression.
