In eight years, Greenwood Rocks has grown to include more than 8,700 painted rocks enthusiasts of all ages.

Started by Lander University communication professor Robert Stevenson in 2017, this creative outlet has flourished, thanks in part to the members-only Greenwood Rocks Group site on Facebook.

Greenwood Rocks got its start when someone messaged Stevenson on Facebook asking him, “Why don’t we have Greenwood Rocks?”

The question prompted Stevenson to do some research, which led him to sites such as Aiken Rocks and Western North Carolina Rocks.

“A couple days later, I made a video explaining that Greenwood Rocks was starting,” Stevenson said, noting there are rules for members to follow, including not hiding rocks in certain locations.
