**Stellantis Halts Jeep Production Plans in Canada Amid U.S. Investment** Stellantis NV has announced it will stop plans to manufacture the Jeep Compass SUV at its Brampton, Ontario, plant. This decision raises concerns about the future of one of the company’s two major assembly facilities in Canada. The move is part of a larger strategy as Stellantis invests $13 billion to strengthen its operations in the United States and avoid tariffs. The company will now produce the Compass in Belvidere, Illinois. In late 2023, Stellantis had indicated plans to retool the Brampton plant for Jeep production. However, in February, following threats of tariffs from former President Donald Trump against foreign automobiles, Stellantis paused those plans. Despite this, the company had previously assured that it intended to bring the factory back online. The Brampton facility employed approximately 3,000 unionized workers when it was operational. A spokesperson for Stellantis stated, "Canada is very important to us. We have plans for Brampton and will share them upon further discussions with the Canadian government." Prime Minister Mark Carney emphasized the government's expectation that Stellantis will honor its commitments to Brampton workers. He stated, "Together with the Government of Ontario and Unifor, we are working with the company to develop the right measures to protect Stellantis employees and to create new opportunities for them in and around Brampton." Lana Payne, the national president of Unifor, which represents the workers at the Brampton plant, expressed strong concerns about the situation. She stated, "Governments cannot stand by while our jobs are shifted to the United States. Saving Brampton Assembly must now be this country’s top priority, sending a strong message to any corporation thinking they can take the same egregious actions." The future of the Brampton plant remains uncertain as discussions continue between Stellantis, the Canadian government, and labor representatives. The outcome of these negotiations will be crucial for the workers and the local economy.
