A beach in a popular holiday location in Lanzarote has been closed by the authorities after suspected sewage leaks were detected.

Playa del Reducto in Arrecife, the island’s capital, is shut off from members of the public and an advisory warning has been issued for people to stay out of the water, Canarian Weekly reports.

Water samples are being analysed by health technicians to determine the extent of the contamination before any decisions are made on whether the beach can reopen.

The sewage leaks were detected near Punta del Camello, located at the far end of the beach.
