The Municipality of West Perth has reopened its Mitchell wetlands a week after a number of dead Canada geese were found with now-confirmed bird flu, with officials saying the virus poses a low risk to humans.
The wetlands — a popular spot for both bird watchers and hikers, — was closed on Oct. 6 to await test results on geese found dead a few days prior. Testing was completed at the University of Guelph, which confirmed avian influenza on Oct. 9. The wetlands were reopened on Oct. 14 after municipal officials consulted with both Huron Perth public health and Canadian Wildlife Services, said Dan Hobson, West Perth’s top administrator.

Hobson said there were reports late last week of one or two dead birds found around the municipality, but nothing was reported over the
