Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh Wednesday expressed deep concern over the World Meteorological Organisation’s (WMO) report that atmospheric carbon dioxide levels reached a record high of 424 parts per million in 2024. This marks the largest annual increase since measurements began in 1957.

“The World Meteorological Organisation has just revealed that the atmospheric carbon dioxide levels reached 424 parts per million in 2024,” Jairam Ramesh said in a post on X.

“This is, by far, the highest annual increase that has taken place since such measurements began in 1957,” Ramesh further said attributing the surge to continued fossil fuel use, increased wildfires, and declining absorptive capacity of carbon sinks like oceans and forests due to global warming.
