If California’s Proposition 50 truly amounts to a fight to save democracy, as its proponents claim, the amount of money flooding into the campaign reflects the stakes.
More than $200 million has poured into Prop. 50, according to an Examiner analysis of campaign-finance data, including more than $4 million in contributions directly from San Franciscans, according to the analysis.
The City’s largest contributors to Prop. 50 are among those most active in local politics, too. They include billionaire venture capitalist Michael Moritz, who has put $2.5 million behind Prop. 50. Mimi Haas — a billionaire with a large stake in Levi Strauss who is also the mother of San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie — has pitched in $750,000.
