A former employee of a Winnipeg building product supplier has been charged after allegedly defrauding the company of more than $4 million over eight years.

The Winnipeg Police Service said its Financial Crimes Unit began investigating in October 2024 after receiving a report of suspected fraud involving the company’s rebate program for business clients.

Between April 2016 and April 2024, investigators allege a 50-year-old salesman registered four fake homebuilding companies and created fictitious employee names to submit fraudulent rebate claims. Using forged cheques, he filed about 5,500 false applications and collected nearly $4.2 million in rebates.
