Florida coach Billy Napier's time in Gainesville could be coming to an end.
The Gators had some hope at another midseason turnaround after a 1-3 start, shocking a top-10 Texas team at home in Week 6. However, they didn't bring that momentum with them on the road to College Station in Week 7, and after a 17-point loss to Texas A&M, UF fell to 2-4 on the year as Napier's overall record dropped to 21-23 in Year 4.
It's been widely speculated that the 2025 season will be Napier's last at Florida, and it seems a change could be imminent. According to USA TODAY Sports' Matt Hayes, UF athletics director Scott Stricklin met with a group of "influential boosters" on Tuesday and was told that continued financial support for the football program would depend on a change in leadership.
Three anonymous sources told Hayes that a change could come as soon as this weekend. They added that Napier will not survive another loss, though the hope would be that he would coach the rest of the season after a change is announced.
The Gators return home this weekend to host Mississippi State in a homecoming matchup.
Napier found himself in a similar spot after a rough start last season. Reports began to circulate that boosters had pooled together the money for Napier's buyout, which currently sits at around $20 million, with roughly $10 million of that due within the first 30 days after his firing.
However, Napier ultimately survived, and that money was used for NIL purposes to assemble the 2025 roster. According to Hayes, the sources stated that the stipulation for Napier returning this season was that he would hire a play-caller, although that never occurred.
Hayes also reported that the Gators made a run at Ole Miss offensive coordinator Charlie Weis Jr. ahead of the 2024 season, but he opted to remain on Lane Kiffin's staff.
Napier currently holds the worst record of any Florida head coach in the modern era, and it seems to be a question of when, not if, he will be fired. Depending on the result in Saturday's game in the Swamp, that change could be coming in the next week.
After the Mississippi State game, Florida has a bye before its annual rivalry matchup against Georgia in Jacksonville, which would present a convenient opportunity for a change in leadership.
