MATTOON, Ill. (WCIA) -- A man accused of attacking two people with an axe and a chair in Coles County has been determined unfit to stand trial.

On Oct. 14, 50-year-old Matthew Estes appeared in court for a status hearing. Court records show that following a fitness report, Estes was found unfit to stand trial.

In July, Mattoon Police Department officers responded to a report of a man, later identified as Estes, allegedly attacking two people with an axe and a chair near the intersection of Moultrie Avenue and N. 17th Street. One victim was taken to Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center and the other victim went to Memorial Hospital in Springfield due to the “serious injuries” they sustained. At the time, police told WCIA that both victims were in stable condition at their respective hospitals
