KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Missouri Secretary of State Denny Hoskins announced Wednesday the approval of a referendum petition seeking to repeal the state's new congressional map, which was signed into law in September.
The redistricting of Missouri's congressional map has drawn criticism from opponents who claim the revised map targets a seat held by Democratic U.S. Rep. Emanuel Cleaver. Democrats have accused Republicans of blatant gerrymandering, saying the new map will help Republicans win an additional U.S. House seat in next year's elections.
Hoskin's approval authorizes the referendum's sponsor – Richard von Glahn, who's associated with People Not Politicians Missouri – to begin collecting signatures from registered Missouri voters. The secretary of state approved the referendum on Oct. 1
