The Scanlon Foundation Research Institute's has found ongoing strains in belonging, trust, and identity, especially among millennials, gen Z and those facing financial hardship.

However, the annual survey reveals social cohesion is proving resilient against financial pressures and global uncertainty.

Lead author James O'Donnell told AAP the sense of belonging has been declining over time and could be generational.
