Former Waverly postmaster Merri Ann Burgart was indicted Oct. 9 of wire fraud, according to documents from the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Iowa Eastern Division.
While working for the U.S. Postal Service in Waverly, Burgart allegedly submitted false entries for mileage reimbursements for delivery on rural routes. Payments for the fraudulent claims were made to an account the defendant controlled at a credit union.
Documents show that Burgart submitted claims for 727 miles on or around Aug. 19, 2023, and 545 miles on or around Oct. 21, 2023. On those days she reportedly did not scan mail “in order to conceal her false [mileage] claims,” per the court documents.
