“The Smashing Machine,” directed by Benny Safdie, is an incredibly raw look into the life of MMA pioneer Mark Kerr — with a career best performance from Dwayne Johnson.
Based almost entirely off the 2002 documentary of the same name, “The Smashing Machine” is a fact-based drama with sensational performances from its lead cast, stunning cinematography and a boastful score that keeps the narrative nailed to the ground. While this film can draw you in during devastatingly real moments of humanity, the movie as a whole never really finds its footing for an engaging story.
