Politicians have endorsed city hall’s plan to set up a modular homeless shelter community in an industrial park along Highway 401, despite concerns about short notice and other possible sites.

Sixty modular shelters are proposed for a city-owned property at the northeast of the Max Brose Drive and Cheese Factory Road intersection – a largely industrial and rural area near Highbury Avenue.

“There’s still more people on the streets than ever who are unsheltered and winter is coming . . . We need to take some action to provide some spaces through the winter. This is one of the ways that we can take some action very quickly,” Mayor Josh Morgan said after Wednesday’s meeting of the community and protective services committee.
