SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) - At 1:15 p.m. Tuesday, the City of Brookings Police Department received a report for suspected physical abuse to a 3-month-old baby.

An investigation revealed that 19-year-old Brookings man Bailey D. Melchor allegedly abused his 3-month-old daughter by throwing, striking, squeezing and choking the infant over a period of time.

The infant was treated at Brookings Hospital but has since been transferred to Sioux Falls Sanford Hospital. She's being treated for multiple fractures to the ribs and extremities, as well as a possible brain hemorrhage.

According to a press release from the Brookings Police, Melchor was charged with abuse or cruelty to a minor under age 7 and aggravated battery of an infant, which are both felonies.
