In June 2021, two-time school board candidate Virginia Elizondo filed a lawsuit alleging that Spring Branch ISD was violating the Voting Rights Act of 1965. In the lawsuit — originally filed in the U.S Southern District Court of Texas — Elizondo's lawyers argued that despite making up approximately 59% of the student body in 2021, the Houston district's Hispanic community was underrepresented on the school board compared to the district's white community, which accounted for about 27% of the student population at the time.
