LANSING, Mich. — The Michigan State Board of Education is weighing changes to the state's health and sexual education curriculum standards for the first time since 2007.
The new health education standards were drafted by the Michigan Department of Education (MDE), whose leadership was appointed by the Democrat-led board of education. That board consisting of six Democrats and two Republicans that were elected through statewide elections to serve eight-year terms.
The new standards have quickly become a hot-button issue as parents, educators, lawmakers, board members and other stakeholders have debated whether these newly drafted standards are driven by inclusivity or indoctrination.
