Alberta is rolling out plans to upgrade its current licence plates to ones that will say “strong and free.”

At a press conference Wednesday, Premier Danielle Smith, alongside Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction Minister Dale Nally, said Albertans will be able to take part in a “tournament-style” online vote to choose the final licence plate design. There will be eight designs to choose from that will display landscapes and symbols unique to Alberta.

The transition to the new plate will cost between $25,000 to $50,000, said Nally. He said the province is using internal resources to pay for the change and will be “absorbing as many of those costs as possible.”
