Olympic great Ariarne Titmus has announced her retirement from swimming at age 25.

The four-time Olympic gold medallis t revealed the decision on Instagram on October 16, describing it as "a really tough one", but one she felt at peace with.

"I love swimming, I've always loved swimming," she said.

"It's been my passion since I was a little girl.

"I've taken time away from the sport and realised that some things that are important to me now are a little more important than swimming - and that's okay."

Titmus had taken 12 months off after the Paris Olympics and initially intended to return.

However, she said the turning point came in the lead-up to Paris, when she faced health challenges that "really rocked" her mentally.
