CALERA, Ala. ( WBRC ) - Wednesday marked five months since 73-year-old Reuben Waithaka, a grandfather visiting from Kenya, disappeared near a Calera neighborhood .

“If there is any sliver of hope that he may be out there and we may can find him, we’re not going to stop,” said Calera Police Chief David Hyche.

Waithaka was last spotted near Merion Drive around the Timberline neighborhood May 15, 2025.

Police say he was seen on video walking behind a gas station.

“Few minutes later witnesses say they saw him go under a fence into a hunting club area that is an enormous wooded area,” Hyche said.

Waithaka was visiting Alabama from Kenya to celebrate his grandson’s graduation.

The police chief tells WBRC they have brought in drones, K9s, and given the case national attention.
