POLK COUNTY, Iowa —

A grieving family is calling for urgent safety improvements through an online petition and more at an intersection along the High Trestle Trail in Polk County that some call dangerous after their loved one died.

Last Thursday, Courtney “Corey” Petersen, 44, was hit and killed by a dump truck while riding her hand-pedal recumbent bike. The crash happened at the intersection where the High Trestle Trail crosses NW 44 th Street between Polk City and Ankeny. The overall trail and that stretch of it is one Corey and others frequently use for cycling.

“I don’t want any other families to go through what we’re having to go through,” said Bradley Petersen, Corey’s husband.
