RALEIGH, N.C. (WITN) - A Snow Hill family took home top honors at the North Carolina Fair on Wednesday in the North Carolina-only category of the Giant Pumpkin weigh-off competition.
The pumpkin from the Donald Murphy family weighed in at 682.6 pounds, besting their third-place finish last year of a 332.1-pound pumpkin.
The overall winner for all states competing in the Giant Pumpkin contest sanctioned by the Great Pumpkin Commonwealth went to Albert Rodebaugh of Craigsville, West Virginia, with a pumpkin weighing in at a whopping 2,244.5 pounds. That is a record for the fair and a state record for West Virginia.
The Wednesday weigh-off also featured the biggest watermelon. The top honors went to Christopher Kent of Sevierville, Tennessee, with a 288.6-pound watermelon.
