PORTLAND, Ore. — Tomorrow marks the International Shakeout, when millions of people around the world will hold earthquake drills. In Oregon, the event coincides with a major discovery by local researchers.

“The Big One” — the catastrophic earthquake scientists have warned about for years — may have even bigger consequences than first thought.

Many Californians are used to hearing about earthquakes.

“It's going to happen when it happens. They can predict the weather; they can't predict an earthquake,” said Gina Herb from Southern California.

Even Oregonians have heard warnings about “The Big One” for years.

“I'm not super concerned about it. I feel I've heard it so many times, and nothing's happened,” said Jasmine Barganier from Portland.
