NORFOLK, Va. — The Norfolk School Board voted 6-1 on Wednesday night to approve a closure and consolidation plan for schools.
The plan closes nine schools between now and the 2033-34 school year. It also repurposes or rebuilds half a dozen other schools.
School Board Member Tanya Bhasin was the only vote against the plan.
The first moves in the plan include closing Willoughby Early Childhood Center and moving the pre-K to Oceanair Elementary School. Oceanair would be repurposed, and Norview Elementary School would close.
All of those moves would happen in the 2026-27 school year.
A rezoning plan to redistribute student populations will be finalized no later than February, with a public hearing and vote prior to March 30, 2026, officials said.
The closure plan was made necessary by a
