WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump on Wednesday declared in the Oval Office that funding for the $16 billion Gateway Tunnel project has been "terminated" — an announcement that comes two weeks after his administration announced funding for the major rail tunnel would be suspended amid the government shutdown.

Trump, fielding questions from reporters, took aim at Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) as Congressional Democrats and Republicans remain at an impasse over a short-term spending bill to reopen the federal government, which has been shut down for the past 15 days.

"The project in Manhattan, [the] project in New York, it's billions and billions of dollars that Schumer has worked 20 years to get. It's terminated. Tell him it’s terminated," Trump said.
