WASHINGTON (Gray DC) - The U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments Wednesday in a case that could fundamentally change how race is used when drawing congressional districts and potentially gut a major piece of civil rights legislation.
At the center of the dispute is a challenge to Louisiana’s new second majority-Black congressional district that a group of non-African American voters argue constitutes an illegal racial gerrymander. The case, Louisiana v. Callais, has implications extending far beyond Louisiana, potentially prohibiting state lawmakers from using race when drawing voting maps nationwide.
