Chennai: The Northeast Monsoon, the primary rainy season for Tamil Nadu, is expected to commence today, following the withdrawal of the Southwest Monsoon from the Indian subcontinent. The Meteorological Department has forecast widespread rainfall across the state, with heavy to very heavy showers likely in several southern and central districts, prompting the declaration of a holiday for schools in Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, and Thoothukudi.
The transition between the two monsoon seasons is creating a favourable environment for significant rainfall. The state has already witnessed pre-monsoon activity, with Chennai and Ennore recording 14 cm of rainfall in the 24 hours leading up to 8:30 am yesterday, indicating the building intensity of the incoming weather system.
