AUSTIN, Texas — A proposed Texas constitutional amendment that would let judges deny bail to people accused of certain violent or sexual crimes is drawing constitutional concerns ahead of the November election.

Proposition 3 would allow — and in some cases require — judges to keep defendants in jail before trial if they’re considered a flight risk or a danger to the community. Supporters say it will protect victims and prevent repeat offenses, but critics warn it could go too far, limiting judicial discretion and keeping people locked up who haven’t been convicted of a crime.
