CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- As the federal government shutdown stretches into another day, Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine is calling for more cooperation from the other side of the aisle, saying the stalemate could be resolved quickly if President Donald Trump stepped in.

"Thus far, President Trump bluntly has refused to engage in these discussions. That's why we are where we are," said Kaine. "The way we avoid them is president gets congressional leaders together and helps negotiate a deal. And we could do that within a day or two if President Trump would engage."
