BEAUMONT, Texas — As Hispanic Heritage Month comes to a close, many Southeast Texans are raising questions about President Donald Trump’s March executive order declaring English the official language of the United States.

The order, signed March 1st, revokes a previous executive order that required federal agencies to provide multilingual services. However, local immigration attorney Kristy Wendler says the impact may not be as sweeping as some fear.

“It’s a shift. We’ve never had an official language,” said Wendler, co-owner of Wendler Law Group. “Some people might say, ‘Well, we can’t help you unless you speak English.’ That’s not what this executive order says.”
