A New South Wales unsolved homicide squad detective has told an inquest his review of evidence surrounding the death of teenager Mark Haines led him to conclude suicide or misadventure were the most plausible theories.

The body of Mark Haines was found on train tracks 8 kilometres south of Tamworth on the morning of January 16, 1988.
He had suffered a head injury.
The circumstances of how his body came to be on the tracks has been subject to intense speculation in the town ever since.
