The reason why the sale of the old Mill Road library in Cambridge fell through earlier this year has been disputed. Cambridgeshire County Council issued a statement in August stating that the preferred bidder it had agreed to sell the building to had withdrawn their offer.

However, the former bidder, who asked not to be named, told the Local Democracy Reporting Service that a land ownership dispute was brought to their attention late in the process which meant the old library could not be sold before the deadline. The county council said it had been “transparent” with the former bidder about the land ownership issue.

It was the second time the county council had tried to sell the old library. The first potential buyer for the building, children's charity Centre 33, was chosen in 2023
