Independent MP James McMurdock has questioned the UK Government about whether it intends to review the Personal Allowance threshold to "prevent pensioners paying income tax".

The Personal Allowance has remained frozen at £12,570 since 2021, and earlier this year, the Labour Government confirmed it will stay at that level until April 2028, reports the Daily Record .

Nevertheless, the new state pension is set to surpass the Personal Allowance by April 2027, and if next year's uprating is calculated using the earnings growth figure of 4.8 per cent, it will leave pensioners with merely £23 income wiggle room before they are required to pay tax.
